The event, long seen as Hollywood’s favourite party, has been a shadow of its former self for the past two years. On Tuesday, it is trying to restore its image, tarnished by numerous scandals.
Steven Spielberg’s intimate The Fabelmans, the Elvis biopic and the second instalments of the behemoths Top Gun and Avatar will compete at the Golden Globes on Tuesday 10 January. This ceremony should allow the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, to restore an image tarnished by several scandals surrounding the jury.
A tainted reputation
The relaxed and lavish event, long perceived as Hollywood’s favourite party, has been a shadow of its former self for two years. The pandemic, and above all accusations of racism, sexism and corruption aimed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), have passed.
The Golden Globes, which were shunned by the elite and deprived of television last year, are back on NBC. The American network agreed to broadcast the 80th edition, after a series of reforms by the HFPA to improve its diversity and prohibit its members from accepting gifts from the studios.
Many big names are invited, including director Steven Spielberg, whose semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans is the favourite for best dramatic film, and actor Eddie Murphy, who is to be honoured for his lifetime achievement.
Several big absentees
This year’s red carpet is likely to be limited. Many nominees have not yet confirmed their attendance, and most of the after-parties usually organised by the studios to drown their winners in champagne will not take place.
The ceremony already has two notable absentees. Brendan Fraser, nominated for his role as an obese, housebound professor in The Whale, has accused a former HFPA president of sexually assaulting him and will boycott the event. Tom Cruise, producer of Top Gun: Maverick, is also expected to be absent, having returned his three Golden Globes in protest at the scandals. His feature film will attempt, along with the other huge 2022 box office hit Avatar: The Way of the Water, to prevent The Fabelmans from winning Best Drama.
Les challengers
Tar, qui se déroule dans le monde de la musique classique, et le biopic Elvis, sur le roi du rock’n’roll, pourraient également surprendre. Du côté des comédies, la tragicomédie The Banshees d’Inisherin, qui dépeint la fin abrupte d’une amitié sur une petite île irlandaise dans les années 1920, concourra dans huit catégories, une première depuis 20 ans. Le film sera opposé au film surréaliste et ébouriffant Everything Everywhere All At Once, qui pourrait valoir des prix d’interprétation à Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis et Ke Huy Quan.
Renouvellement
Face à la controverse, la HFPA a renouvelé le jury des Golden Globes, en incluant 103 nouveaux membres qui ne sont pas des membres à part entière de l’association, dont beaucoup de femmes et de personnes issues de minorités ethniques. Après les récentes controverses, le prestige des prix est en jeu lors de cette cérémonie. Par le passé, un succès aux Golden Globes était un outil de marketing précieux, capable de lancer une campagne gagnante pour la première récompense aux Oscars.
À Hollywood, certains initiés de l’industrie disent en privé qu’ils espèrent que les récompenses, qui ont été “un rouage important de la saison des prix” pendant 80 ans, reviendront en grâce, observe le chroniqueur Pete Hammond. D’ailleurs, les affiches de films mettent à nouveau en avant les nominations aux Golden Globe, contrairement à l’année dernière. Mais pour le chroniqueur, leur pouvoir d’influence sur les Oscars semble définitivement diminué.
